Santikos Art in the Garden presents Geometric Harmony by emerging Mexican artist, Alejandro Martin, AKA “Otto” at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. The exhibition, curated by Adriana Cisneros, will be exhibited from January 31, 2019 through January 2020. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition. Guests are invited to the exhibit opening on January 31, 2019 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm. The exhibit opening is free to the public.
Since 2004, Art in the Garden has brought together the public, artists, and art supporters for extended exhibitions by local, regional and national contemporary sculpture artists. It is one of the Garden’s best-known and most anticipated annual cultural programs. Santikos Art in the Garden promotes accessibility to the arts while enhancing the Garden experience by introducing visitors to emerging and established artist’s work in a natural environment.
Santikos Art in the Gardenis supported by a grant from the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation, a fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation, the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts, and in partnership with Art Legacy and Gomez Vasquez International. The John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation, a fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation, was created by John L. Santikos – entrepreneur, real estate developer and movie theatre businessman – who passed away December 30, 2014. Mr. Santikos gifted the bulk of this estate to the San Antonio Area Foundation to establish his legacy, continue the successful operation of his businesses and make significant annual donations beyond his lifetime. Based in Mexico City, Otto’s metal sculptures are informed by digital symbols of his generation. Bold, larger-than-life hashtags feature prominently in his works alongside asterisks and block figures that seem to emerge from a real-life Minecraft© game. Otto studied at the Lumen School and has developed projects at the Art Institute of Chicago and has collaborated with musical artist BEZESIE to create the cover art for their newest album, The Lights. For Otto, sculpting gives him the ability to express himself. He is constantly looking for inspiration. Lines and figures awaken his ideas. That’s the reason why he is always outside his studio, contemplating buildings and the urban architecture around him.
His sculptures represent the care and love he has for his work. His art pieces are his family. He even considers his sculptures as his kids, made by him, and at the same time, giving back a projection of his inner self.
Of his sculpture, he says that his art lives in a world made and seen in lines and colors. His sculptures are the answer to express the lines that he sees in his own reality. He sees space as a playground, something that only he understands and wants to show. Starting and finding himself as an artist was difficult. Once he understood his language and how it should develop, everything became easier, but at the same time, it became complicated as he started to grow and find new challenges.
